The Wright Taxi Company, Alexandria

It is difficult to think of a better location for a taxi or private hire company than Alexandria, a mere five minute drive from the stunningly beautiful Loch Lomand.

This incredibly scenic area - just half an hour from Glasgow - offers some of the best countryside views in this or indeed any other country... which perhaps makes it all the more surprising when you stumble upon a small company with unusually bold business ambitions, and an extremely clear vision of where it wants to go, and how it will get there.

Formed just four months ago, The Wright Taxi Company is already making big waves in the area.  The firm has one very clear, very bold objective: to become the biggest and most successful firm in what is already an extremely competitive region.  A dangerous case of wishful thinking?  You might think so, until you meet the Director, Allan Wright.

Having decided to open a taxi firm, Allan formed The Wright Taxi Company in June 2009, with the clear intention of going head to head with the major local companies - the largest of which already runs 150 cars.

Wright Taxi Co set up operations almost on its main rival's doorstep, ready to fight for a share of the market.  Starting from scratch, Wright Taxis immediately set about recruiting drivers from other firms.  15 drivers were there on day one, and that figure has already risen to 21 - a hugely impressive 40% increase in just four months.

So what is attracting so many drivers to this new company, in favour of larger, well established organisations?  Firstly, there's some impressively forward thinking going on: "We provide a better service for the drivers," explains Allan.  "We offer reduced rates for new drivers; give Christmas bonuses and holidays - and if a car is off the road then we reduce the rent, too."

But of course the choice of Data Dispatch system is a key element of driver satisfaction too – which is why Wright's chose to go with established industry leader Auriga Systems' next generation Evocab system.  "We looked at a number of suppliers, and I took on board what the drivers had to say too," continues Allan.  "The unanimous decision was that Auriga's was the best on offer.  There were cheaper options, but it was essential that the drivers wanted to work with the system," he continues.

Complementing the Evocab system are Auriga's flagship in-vehicle CT4000 units, which offer integrated satellite navigation and Fallback GPRS for low cost nationwide coverage - crucial for those out-of-area airport jobs.

It certainly goes a long way to explaining why Wright's have already managed to attract so many converts: "The drivers are extremely happy," Allan concludes simply.

But how could a smaller company afford to invest with Auriga, who have traditionally been the supplier of choice for the country's larger companies?  Allan suggests the system wasn't quite as expensive as you might think, but really the answer is one of value for money, both in terms of the system provided, and the relationship between the organisations: "The system does exactly what we were told it would," says Allan.  "We have a good relationship with Auriga; we liked what we saw when we visited the office, and we're extremely happy with the response from the support team when we have needed it."

And it's not just the driver figures that are up:  Wright Taxi Co is making huge inroads in terms of quantity of work too.  Job counts are rising 16-20% week-on-week, and the company is picking up some quality account work, with a recently-agreed Iceland account providing cause for celebration.

Key to this growth has been an innovative approach to promotion.  "We've done lots of promotion," Allan explains.  "We have been advertising in local papers and on the radio; as well as doing a series of small giveaways, such as lollipops for parents travelling with children; fridge magnets, local restaurant vouchers and so on."

Clearly this is a new company making great efforts to present the correct image to the local community, with shiny new vehicles emblazoned with Wright's distinctive yellow logo, and enticing "There's a new choice... the Wright choice" tagline.  There is also the sensible decision to provide driver uniforms, and kit all the cars out with distinctive orange top lights, designed to help customers identify Wright vehicles.

But more than anything else, it is the type of service and attention to detail which is making the difference.  "We're the local company: fast, friendly, and reliable; and with that personal touch" continues Allan.  It's a message which seems to be getting through.

Add in some serious business sense - setting up in a rival firm's old office and taking over the rank outside was a clever move - and this family-run organisation (Allan's daughter Allana works in the office with Office Manager Stephen McEwan) is definitely heading in the right direction.  "This time next year we want to have 50 cars.  Longer term, we will be the big fish in this town," concludes Allan.

It's a bold goal - especially given the recent economic climate - but with the start Wright's have made you wouldn't bet against them.  But one thing's for sure: this company won't be forgetting its roots.  That friendly, local offering will still be there, driving The Wright Taxi Company towards bigger and better things.
